We exist to re-claim lives of formerly incarcerated people, re-purpose urban land into productive farm plots, and re-imagine disenfranchised communities throughout Los Angeles as a place of empowerment.

We harvest and distribute the fresh food from our urban farms.  Along with partner-agencies, our food is transformed into nutritious meals for people who are food insecure.

We provide at-risk youth with tools to make healthier decisions, and we provide them with education in healthy eating, horticulture and environmental stewardship.

We grow local, organic and sustainable food in re-purposed land and sell the high-quality food to restaurants with seasonal menus and at our farmstand.

Why We Do It

Alma Backyard Farms reconnects the lives of the formerly incarcerated back to the fabric of society.

Our participants have the chance at attaining gainful employment and becoming self-sufficient.

Urban Farming helps everyone involved explore the relationships between plants, animals and

humans as a way of creating a profound connection to both nature and their community.

"Farming brings me peace.  I haven't had peace like this before."
